For episode 64 I'm going back to my roots with this one, my very first interview was with a street photographer. I think its just something in some of us to shoot in this way. So today I've finally had a chance to catch up with the man of shadows and highlights, John Hughes.
John is a really good force for street photography, he speaks the truth and from the heart. If he doesn't like something he will tell you, so if honesty isn't for you look elsewhere! John is a full-time photographer and runs workshops, creates zines and offers one to one coaching.
He talks to us about his early start in life and how a meet up with Bruce Davidson has helped shaped who he is to this day. John actually was introduced through our mutual friend and Kodak Alaris competition winner Barney Maguire (lives in the same town).
Through our conversation we discuss:

Sticky toffee pudding beer
defined at 13 as street photographer
influences
starting digital in 2008
Analogue can hold you back
Workshops+ teaching
Camping out in same spot
Ricoh gr 2 vs 3
Camera tech
Blogging + writing problems
Find differences locations to shoot
Shooting the shadows
Starbucks 12 month project
Spending 12 hours in tate

We also talk about matters like is technology actually important with street photography? About projects and ways to shoot in everyday places.

RANDOM QUESTIONS
We did a laugh with the random questions too (*** we may or may not have cut one out as this is a family show after all). There are only the odd few swear words, so bear with us. So find out:

why John wants to punch me
what "nailmeup.com" is all about
why we talk about sticky toffee
drinking with a few blokes call John

INFO
If you want to know more about John and his work check him out here:
Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/pavementsphotography/
Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/john.hughes.photography/
Website - https://www.johnhughesphotography.uk/

EXTRA CONTENT
Visit my website to see links, photos and items discussed on this show.
http://phlogger.co.uk/

---

Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/photography-insights/message Phlogger (Andrew Walmsley) yes Interview with commercial analogue shooter – Christina Zen https://phlogger.co.uk/interview-with-commercial-analogue-shooter-christina-zen/ Wed, 16 Oct 2019 20:00:00 +0000 http://a1c0cb60-6a32-1533-3eb7-5ba434260ef6 https://phlogger.co.uk/interview-with-commercial-analogue-shooter-christina-zen/#respond https://phlogger.co.uk/interview-with-commercial-analogue-shooter-christina-zen/feed/ 0
For episode 62 we have a talented commercial photographer Christina Zen – who shoots film! One of your friends will be interested, you can guarantee, there is a massive range of people interviewed so there is something for everyone’s interest.

Today we have a legendary film and video photographer from the UK called Paul Berriff. He’s been shooting over 50 years in the press world of photography and documentary film making.

Paul purchased his first camera from a newspaper round, he followed emergency vehicles on his pushbike in his teens! He learned to test his film exposure by meeting bands like the Beatles, Rolling stones in their dressing rooms in the 1960’s

Paul has some great stories from just working in the press industry and then goes into the 4 near-death experiences. I mean if you listen to them it's crazy and you might wonder how he’s still with us. I think most people would have given up after experiences like this. One of these concerns 9/11 and you cant feel the magnitude of what Paul is saying, so please do check out his video on Youtube.

As usual, check out the show notes on the website for links to his amazing work.

Rolleiflex medium format

Attic darkrooms

Chasing emergency services

Press photography

beatles/pink floyd,rolling stones at 16

Tri-x

Speed graphic, rolleiflex & Nikon f

Don't breathe for low shutter speeds!

Printers waited for Paul

1 film roll per story

Getting your film on time for trains

Police don’t arrest press photographers

Trained as fireman 2get first on scenes

Spend time with your subjects

1 year with Nasa astronauts

Digital +smart phone revolution

World treade center

Filming ground zero clearing up

INFO

Website - https://www.paulberriff.com/

Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7pWtj2ynOM

---

Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/photography-insights/message Phlogger (Andrew Walmsley) clean Clay McBride – interview with a music photographer https://phlogger.co.uk/clay-mcbride-interview-with-a-music-photographer/ Wed, 18 Sep 2019 20:00:00 +0000 http://0db1201a-e906-1709-71a6-fe8f47809c08 https://phlogger.co.uk/clay-mcbride-interview-with-a-music-photographer/#respond https://phlogger.co.uk/clay-mcbride-interview-with-a-music-photographer/feed/ 0
Welcome to episode 58 of Photography insights, your one-stop guide to interviews with people in the photography industry. This time we feature the amazing Clay Patrick Mcbride from New York City.
